In a post-recession climate, warm up with fur! It's different, but it's back.

Fur, as always, has found its way back into high fashion. This time though it sheds aristocratic associations in exchange for its original burly mountain man/snow sherpa like silhouette. Consuelo Castiglioni who first launched Marni in the 1990′s as an exclusively fur line, is no stranger to this fur reposition, confidently melding fur elements with tartan, bold striped leggings and hints of rock-a-billy. For Chloe, fur adds masculine clout to an otherwise soft and elegant collection. And Celine’s fur usuage rests on the Parisian ideal that fur is a staple item, that any girl can efortlessly whisk from their wardrobe and layer to protect from the cold – which seems radical to us, but quite natural to those within the Paris utopia context.

These pre-fall collections remind us that although fur today holds prestigious cultural value, it is one of the oldest, simplest fabrics around, once worn by caveman and Neanderthals for practical purposes. Perhaps re-identifying fur with these origins makes it more accessible to a wider audience (the 99%?!). Clearly an ironic re-identification, but a good-looking one nonetheless.

In stark contrast to SS12, it seems the pre-fall message from Europe is to 'man up'.

After the ultra-feminine ’50s revival looks put forth by Marni, Prada, Miu Miu, Rochas, Proenza, Louis and basically everybody in SS12, the pre-fall looks appear to indicate a bit of a backlash. Chloe (far left) and Celine (far right) presented super baggy, sculptured pants and Rochas, Stella McCartney and many others all exhibited collections worked heavily around the man suit. A cyclic turn that in retrospect seems totally predictable (obviously trends change with each season), however this change, especially that of Celine’s feels so original and offbeat. Can’t wait for the full fall lines to see if bigger, will be better : )
Good to see regular contributions are rolling in over here. The Blackmail now returns to my list of daily visits alongside London based Test Pressing. Run by Paul Byrne, who produces music and DJs under the alias of Apiento, the multi-faceted Test Pressing documents the past, present and future of Balearic culture. It’s expansive offering covers everything from scanned magazine articles from 70/80/90s music bibles, features on record sleeve designers Jean-Paul Goude, Barney Bubbles and Andy Warhol, taped BBC6 transmissions, audio documentaries, reports on new balearic inclined releases and a growing archive of mixtapes contributed by the world’s finest. There’s certainly something in there for everyone and don’t be overwhelmed if you’ve come in late – Paul has just launched a pdf compendium of site highlights including chats with Compass Point Allstar Wally Badarou and former Cafe Del Mar DJ Phil Mison as well as photos spreads of Factory’s Hacienda and Keith Haring visiting The Le Mans 24 Hour in 1984. Load it on your ipad and find a nice tree to spend the afternoon under!
Stephanie Downey of Dress Up is my friend. This means that I am privy to a lot of inside information about her design inspiration, references and the ‘meaning’ of pieces in her collections. Now as much as I have enjoyed the freehold of this somewhat exclusive information I am glad she recently decided to share it more with the world.
