Christopher Day is looking forward to the END and so are we.

Christopher Day’s latest show entitled END, formed as a response to an earlier work A Special Love, opens tonight at a temporary space in Curtin House produced by Johann Rashid.

Having worked on the half-photography, half-collage series of 9 for sometime, this is an end that the artist responsible for Surprise Tough Times, and several exhibits including a solo show at Utopian slumps in 2009, is looking forward to.

However for us the audience, the relationship with the cogent matter and meaning innate in his works only just begins. Retro-ish images of animals made from cement, supermarkets, consumer goods, and old fuel guzzling Ford Falcons negate typical paleo-futurist endearments with a sneering take on ‘the end’. However as Day insists, endings need not always be negative, but rather are a logical consequence of linearity, and as such most of the apocalyptic iconography is delivered in a non serious, jocular tone, “I am totally humored by the fact that there is a whole aisle in supermarkets dedicated to soft drink…it’s brilliant.”, he says.

So whether it’s happy or sad endings you like, you’re bound to find some sense of closure at Christopher Day’s show ‘END‘, opening tonight and closing swiftly three days later.

When: Feb 3, 4 & 5 12-4pm (opening Thursday 6-9pm)
Where: Level 6 Curtin House (just below Rooftop Cinema) 252 Swanston St, CBD.

From 10 February until 11 February 2012, Patrick Dagg will present a unique solo exhibition

From 10 February until 11 February 2012, Patrick Dagg will present a unique solo exhibition
Crash Paintings at Ground Floor, 583 Elizabeth Street, Redfern.

Since 2007, Melbourne-born Dagg has created works that explore the fragility of the human form
through large scale abstract paintings and portraiture, with exhibitions at China Heights Gallery,
Kudos Gallery and UNSW Roundhouse Building.

“Crash Paintings is a collection of work created in response to a serious car accident I had
recently. It has been three years since my last show and the accident gave me the inspiration
for this new direction,” says Dagg.

The exhibition is a combination of paintings and hand painted ceramics which complement
each other with their movement and energy. Lines of colour twist and blend into each other,
flourishing in a world full of imagination and intensity.

Working in disabilities for the last ten years has given Dagg a unique perspective on life which
is strikingly evident in his work. “Every day I work with people with acquired brain injuries and I
consider myself very lucky I wasn’t seriously hurt in the accident. As a society we often take our
health for granted and we should celebrate what we have more often. The crash has kind of
opened me back up and given me the courage to paint freely again,” says Dagg.

You can catch Patrick Dagg’s solo exhibition for a limited time at Ground Floor, 583 Elizabeth
Street, Redfern from Friday 10-11 February 2012.

When I was at University, I had the pleasure of being lectured by Australian immigrant design legend Mimmo D Cozzolino. Mimmo is opening his life and collections up in a new show in February at Monash University.

AFTER I DIE. Archives, autobiography, photography – Mimmo D Cozzolino.

For forty years I’ve been hiding bits of my life in shoe boxes, folders, draws and filing cabinets.

For the last four years (as part of an MFA at Monash University) I’ve been looking at what I put away and choosing the fragments that say something about my life as a migrant and ‘New Australian’, designer, photographer and artist. This research has concluded with the creation of nine limited edition books, which I want to share with you.

The books will be on show at:
Monash Faculty of Art Design & Architecture Masters Gallery D2.09
Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th February 2012, between 10am and 5pm.
Good to see regular contributions are rolling in over here. The Blackmail now returns to my list of daily visits alongside London based Test Pressing. Run by Paul Byrne, who produces music and DJs under the alias of Apiento, the multi-faceted Test Pressing documents the past, present and future of Balearic culture. It’s expansive offering covers everything from scanned magazine articles from 70/80/90s music bibles, features on record sleeve designers Jean-Paul Goude, Barney Bubbles and Andy Warhol, taped BBC6 transmissions, audio documentaries, reports on new balearic inclined releases and a growing archive of mixtapes contributed by the world’s finest. There’s certainly something in there for everyone and don’t be overwhelmed if you’ve come in late – Paul has just launched a pdf compendium of site highlights including chats with Compass Point Allstar Wally Badarou and former Cafe Del Mar DJ Phil Mison as well as photos spreads of Factory’s Hacienda and Keith Haring visiting The Le Mans 24 Hour in 1984. Load it on your ipad and find a nice tree to spend the afternoon under!
Originally thought to be Johnny Jewel‘s rejected score for neo-noir thriller, Drive, Symmetry: Themes From An Imaginary Film is, in fact, a “project that began as a conceptual tangent between Glass Candy, Chromatics, Mirage, and Desire‘s more abstract sides“.

Nearly four years in the making, this two-hour, 36-track epic is an exploration of “space, rhythm and tone… Stripped to its most primitive and visceral core, this is music written for picture. Your life is the film and this is the soundtrack.”

Look out for this on triple-LP sometime in the future. Until then, buckle up for the full-stream below.
The man Fazwon from Kind Of – Gallery just worded me up about this Calligraffiti exhibition that opens on Thursday night at the gallery in Sydney. Pioneered by the Dutchman Niels Shoe Meulman, who started out in the graff scene as Shoe before working as Creative Director for MTV in Europe, calligraffiti is described as “Abstract Expressionism with a Calligraphic origin.” I’m not so sure about the name but I’m feeling the Japanese style handwork.
