If Donny Benet shoots to U2-esque prominence or ends up playing to a stadium full of adolescent girls shrieking his name despite not knowing why they actually like him, Hollywood will make a film about him. It will be the first feature about the life of a disco accordionist/jazz bassist. Continue reading…

A specially commissioned artwork by artist David Capra.
Recently installed on the windows of Five Dock Library, Gold Dust & Gemstones incorporates the artist’s own motifs along with doodling and scribbles made by children from Five Dock Public School and Five Dock Library’s visitors and staff. The artist also worked with Canada Bay Museum members in re-imagining signature flourishes from local historical documents.
Also on exhibition are sculptures, participant designs and historical ledgers and documents used in the design process.

Men everywhere, rejoice. Pageant – the brainchild of Amanda Cumming and Kate Reynolds – hits stores in September.
Cumming and Reynolds met at art school in 2000, and their journey has taken them from Melbourne to London and back again. During this time, they have worked with incredible contemporaries who, as well as shaping their knowledge of the industry, inspired them to launch their first collection at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in Sydney earlier this year.
What Pageant have produced is like a breath of fresh air – from its colour palette to its fabrication choices to the style of its design. Adriana Giuffrida chats to the pair about the path of their creation, their future endeavours and how they manage to find the time. Continue reading…

Did that TV show 24 ever end? Was it supposed to end or was it supposed to go on forever? Like days, consecutive 24-hour lots, over and over till the end of time. But when is the end of time? Where do we as humans fit into time? Right now, I guess. Moments come and then they are gone. Times change, people grow. What I am trying to say is that, after 24 issues of The Blackmail, we are moving on. Our plans are big and they include our friends and contributors, but most of all they include you, our loyal, discerning readers. We have felt every one of your clicks and scrolls in our analytics, and in our hearts, and look forward to the day when you can hold us in your hands.
This issue, we have the inimitable DJ Nozaki, the enigmatic Donny Benet, Note to Self’s Max Olijnyk, Sydney-based designer Georgia Perry and the man in the woods, Warwick Baker. As well as the solo flyers, we have those who prefer double-file: Pageant’s Kate Reynolds and Amanda Cumming, big men on art campus Vasili Kaliman and Jarrod Rawlins, Mitch Brown and Sarah Grieve of Gang Atelier and the modern romantics at Lover. Flying the flag for group love is Sweden’s Little Dragon.
Welcome to Issue 24 of The Blackmail, our final issue in this format. The future is bright, so put on a sun visor and stay current right here on our blog.

Our friends at Grolsch have recruited our old mate Jonny (interviewed here and here) to test drive their new bicycle collaboration with fellow Dutchians Vanmoof. With eco friendly solar powered lights and room for 24 Grolsch Swingtops in the front, this looks like a pretty sweet ride to us… !! Check out some more pictures of this handsome collaboration here…

Be alarmed. At this very moment, the imagery and ideas of late 70s synth punk are being reworked in the suburbs of Melbourne. Total Control, whose debut LP Henge Beat is to be released this month, are bringing a unique kind of gravity back to live music, quietly redirecting people’s imaginations of what punk can be in this strange retroactive century.
As a pre-release copy of Henge Beat spins in my computer, nods to the legacy of Moog pioneers and German discotheques of EBM past emerge. Rising over the shoulders of the more danceable acts post-punk left behind, forging forward and bruising you on the way through are Total Control. Enter drummer James Vinci to talk us through this hot mess of sounds and ideas. Continue reading…
