Pickle Wand

Did your mother every tell you not to bite you nails because the underside of the nails was dirtier than a toilet seat? Mine did, but still I have been a nail biter for as long as I can remember. So it is with trepidation that I stick my dirty mitts into the pickle jar when trying to capture one of the slippery little gherkins for my cheese and crackers. That is because I am the proud owner of a pickle wand.

After my fondness for pickled cucumbers became love while in America, I invested in a slim metal wand with very fine claws to capture stray pickles from deep jars. Apparently sticking your fingers into the vinegary liquid is quite unhygienic, and though I am obviously not the first to be concerned about these insignificants (hence the toilet seat fingers), I love that such an instrument exists.

Another delicious taste of what comes every Tuesday from CC Bakes.

Kale

Dark green leafy vegetables are great in winter. Last week I bought a huge head of kale at the market for $2.50. It didn’t fit in the fridge at first, so bit by bit over the week I have trimmed off it’s edges for different dishes. Kale is from the cabbage family and is very nutritious with antioxidant properties. While it still seems to be one one of the lesser-known leafy greens, it was one of the most common green vegetables in Europe until the end of the Middle Ages.

Kale is quite lush and green but after cooking it down it becomes more of a green algae colour, but it is the texture of the leaves that give it it’s character with their curly edges. A winter vegetable because it can grow well into the cold season, Kale freezes well too and actually tastes sweeter after being expose to frost. This week, I have used kale with white beens as a side dish to hearty winter stew of goat, in soup and in a tart. It is a very versatile vegetable, and delicious too.

August ’10

Posted by: The Blackmail
The Blackmail

This month The Blackmail is decidedly visual. We’ve got the upcoming Disorder Disorder show in Sydney covered on two fronts by way of interviews with curator Joseph Allen Shea and the American artist Chris Johanson. In yet more visual arts we’ve got The Butcher’s Daughter aka Lisa Cooper and the man behind all the DFA and LCD Soundsystem artwork, Michael Vandino. On the photography front there’s Charlie Hillhouse and his publishing entity, Small House Books and Will Braden takes us out to the Kimberley.

There’s Dick Van Straalen’s surfboards, themselves a thing of beauty even when they’re put next to the delicate offerings of Melbourne label, Skinny Nelson. In music we meet the off beat Electric Smile Band for a video interview and PVT tell us why they’re not like any other band.
