Chances are you already know about the Lovefingers website, quite possibly the best site at the moment for downloading rare unearthed music from the past 30-40 years. What you probably don't know is that the man behind the site Andrew Hogge is one of the most friendly and laid back guys going around. A native Californian who currently resides in Brooklyn. He'll probably tell you himself that he's lazy, however he still manages to hold down a full time job and at the same time run two record labels, update his website with daily ‘fingertracks’ and mixes, work on his own music as one half of production duo The Stallions, party with the energy of an 18 year old, tour the world djing. Recently he even became a father, Steele Bonus caught up with Lovfingers a month outside of his second trip down under. Continue reading...

This weeks Cheeky Freak is incredible Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn. Ben plays Andrew 'Pope' Cody in <a href="http://www.animalkingdomthefilm.com.au/"target="_blank">Animal Kingdom, the film that won the World Cinema Jury Prize at this years Sundance film festival. I had the pleasure of seeing this film earlier this week at a Popcorn Taxi screening and it knocked my socks off. Mendelsohn should win an award for his performance and thats all I am going to say. Animal Kingdom is out in cinemas as of next Thursday. Go see it.

There are a few things in America that are new to me; ramps (like a spring onion or wild leek, a member of the onion family), yams (starchy sweet potato from the fruit of the earth family), and albacore. Albacore is a type of tuna with a long fin, the meat is specifically white. The visually identifying features are the pectoral fins of the albacore, which can be as much as 50% of the total length of the fish.
I was curious, and have eaten all three of these (but not for the first time) in the last few days. This sea faring albacore and cabbage salad was one successful meal for one. The colour of it is great, the light, dark, and bright colours. I threw in some cherry tomatoes and crumbled seaweed sheets too, to really get that deep sea feel. I squeezed some lemon juice, poured white wine vinegar and olive oil over the top, and then sprinkled some gomasio - sesame seeds, seaweed and sea salt.
Another delicious taste of what comes every Tuesday from CC Bakes.
Want to ask CC a question? ccbakes@theblackmail.com.au

I've been dying to put up this post ever since early rumours began to surface with whisperings of a second Estee Lauder and Tom Ford collaboration in the works. The first union sprouted a few years ago, with Ford commissioned to create a series of tropic inspired lipsticks as a limited release for the cosmetic giant (colours included 'St Tropez Sunset' and 'Bronze Sand'). However, this latest development sees Ford step out on his own (with Lauder's backing) with his first foray into '<a href="http://www.tomford.com/#/en/thebrand/video?id=2"target="_blank">Tom Ford' branded feminine cosmetics. The new 12 shade 'Private Blend' lipstick collection debuted in the US and UK this week, receiving an uncharacteristically ecstatic welcome for a cosmetics release, and the web is abuzz with rave reviews - despite some niggling over the higher price tag (by comparison, Ford's lipstick pricing sits in line with luxury brands Chanel and YSL at US$45), which is hardly surprising considering the richness of the recipe and Ford's haute profile. Judging by majority <a href="http://fashionista.com/2010/05/tom-fords-new-lipstick-might-actually-be-worth-its-45-price-tag/"target="_blank">reviews, you certainly get what you pay for, a level of unparalleled sophistication and chic that has come to be expected from the designer, and with buttery colours such as 'Ginger Fawn', 'Pink Dusk' and 'Vanilla Suede' I'm chomping at the bit for the Aus. release.

A few Sundays ago I went to church, to the gospel choirs in Harlem. After a morning of song and preach in the back aisles, in our Sunday best, my NY wife and I, head to a little soul food canteen for lunch. Soul food to me is traditionally Southern American cuisine; fried chicken, black eyed beans, collard greens and corn bread. The origins, however, are traced back many years to Africa, including food such as rice sorghum and okra (one of my least favourite slimy vegetables). It also includes the starchy cousin from the sweet potato family, the yam. This has become a common inclusion to the southern American cuisine, and are often fried, and quite sweet, and can look almost a little like caramelised banana (which is also on the menu).
So once you've filled your polystyrene lunch box up with all sorts food for the soul, you get it weighed to pay by the pound, and take it upstairs to the canteen tables that remind you of a fast food chain you wish you didn't know the interior of. But, despite the lacklustre appearance of the location, the food is certainly made with all good honest fried American soul you can fit into your stomach, and usually it's too much, because, if you are like me, your eyes are bigger than your belly and your soul is getting squashed by all the corn bread.
Another delicious taste of what comes every Tuesday from CC Bakes.
