You're viewing the classic version of The Blackmail which was in use from July 2009 until August 2011. The latest version of The Blackmail is now here.
On the 20th of March this year, he quietly stepped out online with his blog, The World News. Almost one month and three playlists later, the only noise he’s making is in playlist form. No pretension, just some really good songs. No commitment, either – you can download, or just listen.
We asked DJ World Music to tell us what it’s all about, and this is what he said.
The World News originally came to be in the prefrontal cortex of my brain. Since its neurological debut, the rest of my body has been so busy giving TWN an existence outside the somewhat-incestuous world of neurons that it hasn’t had a spare moment to ask my brain why it felt the need to create the idea in the first place. With such little available information, one can only assume it was for evolutionary fitness.Continue Reading…
Late last year I treated myself to a special birthday present from the amazing old magic shop on Elizabeth Street here in Melbourne, a pair of hologram eyeball sunglasses. The funny thing about them is when you wear them, besides the fact that passers by have strange expressions on their faces everything seems totally normal. I don’t know what it is that I was expecting before I took them out of the packet but if I could get them to make visual reality distort in some way then I would probably want it to look like this music video. So if you are hungry for something a little skewed, take a big slice of Midnight Juggernauts, broil it in some KROZM and sprinkle a touch of Dylan Martorell for taste then play this video full screen. Mad!

Hot rollers were once all the rage, but these days in a whirlwind of ceramic and ionic technology, it seems like the ol’ roller is taking the back seat. I doubt whether many modern women would still be familiar with the finicky practice of heating, clipping and pinning that once formed the cornerstone of bygone beauty routines. However, there might be life in the holy roller yet. This winter, Chloe’s Hannah Macgibbon delves into the aesthetic of 1970′s Americana, breathing life into the forgotten art of hot rolling.
Rollers come in many different guises, yet they all serve the same purpose – bestowing volume, body and an elegant ‘lived in’ look that can be rarely achieved by using other methods. Contemporary fans of this technique include models Lara Stone and Jessica Stam, who cite iconic American beauties Lauren Hutton and Michelle Pfieffer as their style influences. Certainly nothing says ‘off-duty’ better than a beauty routine spanning several hours… right? Irony aside, there are plenty of YouTube tutorials available, ready to run you through the finer touches of this lost art form.

Now I am of the opinion that every man should, at some point, have a tailor-made suit. For it is not the man that makes the suit, but the fine suit that makes the man look devilishly handsome, especially one that fits him perfectly. It’s a bit like Cindarella – he will become a prince of course – only he won’t turn into a pumpkin if he’s not home by midnight wearing it.
There is something quite charming about a bespoke suit, and a tailor who will measure you up and down. The Blackmail speaks to a cavalier young chap who does just this, Patrick Johnson of Suit Shop. Continue reading…
Tomorrow night, Lamington Drive in Melbourne host the opening of The Infinite Shape Of Rainbows, a show of new work by artist Beci Orpin. Should be a winner!
Usually I associate Easter with family, friends, food, and chocolate eggs of course. This year, as I am in a foreign land, most of those were missing. Not the food part luckily, but mostly the rest. Instead I found myself at a BBQ with some locals and their dogs and rather than Easter eggs there was a chocolate and peanut butter tart. Now, as I am new to NY, this was my very first encounter with the C and PB tart, and certainly it was not my last. The tart looked something a little like the above, and it lead me feel, as I have many times in the last couple of weeks with all the new American foodstuffs to sample – I am going to try this at home. It is a simply brilliant combination, where sweet and savoury totally compliment each other in a extremely decadent way – more than an Easter egg ever could perhaps.
Here is what I have learned from Dion Kovac: retail is a tricky business, clever people are softly spoken and James Cameron is a Freemason. He knows a lot, and will tell you as much as you care to hear. Even his shops speak volumes. Continue reading…
This week’s Cheeky Freak is the lord Malcolm McLaren who sadly passed this week at the age of 64. Above is the video for McLaren’s 1984 hit Buffalo Gals which opened up Hip Hop up to a wider audience in the UK. I’m not going to go on about how much McLaren did for the world of music, take a read of his Wikipedia page if you don’t already know. Rest in peace Malcolm McLaren.
